COURSE TITLE: DIT5212 – COMPUTER APPLICATIONS AND SYSTEMS

Course Description

This course introduces students to the principles and practical skills of computer applications and systems. It equips learners with knowledge of computer hardware, software, operating systems, productivity tools, computer networks, internet technologies, database management, and the role of information systems in society. Emphasis is placed on both theory and hands-on practice, enabling students to apply ICT solutions effectively in academic, business, and professional contexts.

Course Objectives

This course aims to:
a) Provide foundational knowledge of computer systems and applications.
b) Develop proficiency in common productivity applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
c) Introduce concepts of computer networks, internet technologies, and emerging ICT tools.
d) Equip students with skills in database management and information organization.
e) Cultivate awareness of ethical, social, and security issues in ICT.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
a) Identify and describe the main components of a computer system.
b) Use word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation software to create professional documents.
c) Apply basic concepts of computer networks and internet services in practical contexts.
d) Design, organize, and query simple databases using DBMS tools.
e) Demonstrate awareness of ICT-related ethical, security, and environmental issues.
f) Evaluate the impact of information systems on individuals, organizations, and society.

Detailed Course Description

  • Unit 1: Introduction to Computer Systems – basics, hardware, software, types of computers (6 Hrs)
  • Unit 2: Operating Systems – functions, types, file management (5 Hrs)
  • Unit 3: Word Processing Applications – creating, editing, formatting documents (6 Hrs)
  • Unit 4: Spreadsheet Applications – formulas, functions, charts, data analysis (7 Hrs)
  • Unit 5: Presentation Software – creating slideshows, design principles, multimedia integration (5 Hrs)
  • Unit 6: Computer Networks – types, devices, protocols, importance (6 Hrs)
  • Unit 7: The Internet and WWW – browsing, search engines, email, online collaboration (6 Hrs)
  • Unit 8: ICT in Everyday Life – education, business, government, health, entertainment (5 Hrs)
  • Unit 9: ICT Security and Ethics – cyber threats, data protection, ethical use of ICT (5 Hrs)
  • Unit 10: Database Management Systems (DBMS) – concepts, models, advantages, case studies (8 Hrs)
  • Unit 11: Information Systems in Society – types, impacts, ethical issues, future trends (6 Hrs)
